Contracts of Care

DESIGNER

The original idea of ’Contracts of Care' was conceived in 2011  - at Wide Awake Devon we delivered an Associate Producers Programme where we gifted the capacity of a learning producer to a theatre or dance company - there was no financial exchange as the salary was paid to the producer directly from Wide Awake Devon but we needed to set boundaries, expectations, have clear guidelines around working practices and so in trying to create a process that enabled a working relationship to form without any financial exchange, Contracts of Care was born.

Contracts of Care are designed to set out the expectations and intentions of both parties in terms of behaviour, commitment, ambition using informal, plain language rather than focussing on the financial exchange.

The currency of a Contract of Care is value and the areas to explore and discuss with each party is risk, vulnerability and expectations.

The process works best when developed together and are revisited during the contract timeframe.

I am working on a downloadable/add to basked version of Contracts of Care which will be available soon - if you are interested in talking more about this please get in touch.

I was a guest on ITC’s podcast in 2023 talking about this idea which you can listen to this here.

Alice Tatton Brown reviceived Brigstow Funding to explore these ideas further. You can read more about this here.

Please note: In 2015 a collaboration between Emily and Alice began to develop the idea. This version is the product of many conversations between Emily and Alice. Please credit them both if you want to share, adapt or use this Contract of Care for your own project.
